hi,i am english and have lived in Ballingeary(near to dunmanway)for 7/8 years,i hate to say this but i still find it very hard to adapt to life here,i was very homesick for london and still get the odd day when i can't bear it,but although very expensive here,i am sure it is a healthier place to live and somewhat friendlier-still find it odd that complete strangers say hello to you in the street.i do not drive and that is the worst thing as there is very little public transport available unless you live right in cork city...i was excited to go to cork but it really isn't such a big city, however it has a good vibe.I actually yearn to emigrate to spain as i Hate the cold, even irish summers are cold,i have been to italy many times years ago(venice, streza, lake como etc)and adore it,but i feel spain would be easier for us.I personally find italians/spanish etc more friendlier and more passionate about their lives etc than irish/english,it must be the heat!take care and i hope it gets easier for you, from steffi

Hi,
Just saw your post on living in Ireland. I'm Irish and have visited England, Scotland and Wales on numerous occasions. Yes we speak English like England, Scotland and Wales and the landscape of our two islands are very similiar, however we have different cultures, as you are probably aware there is a long history between England and Ireland (England invaded Ireland and took over alot of the land for its own people). Despite this, Ireland has its own unique heritage like any other country. We have different identities and cultures, we have our own Irish myths and legends and our own Gaelic (Irish) language. Ireland was traditionally and still is a rural country with the majority of people living in the countryside until England which is very urbanised with few people living in the countryside.

I understand how you feel, I am a home bird and I can imagine you are lonely and missing your family and friends. The Irish people are generally very welcoming and friendly. You should try and join some local clubs/activities in your free time. Feel free to mail me if you ever want any other info on Ireland or places to visit. I live the other end of the country from Cork but I have visited alot of places already :)
